Glue is normally added during assembly as well, which creates an even stronger connection.

Types of Dovetail Joints

There are several ways to create a dovetail joint. You may see different versions depending on the type of furniture or cabinetry being built.

Through Dovetail

A through dovetail shows the joint from both sides.

The tails and pins remain visible after the pieces are assembled. This is one of the most recognizable versions of dovetail construction and is commonly seen in furniture where the joint itself becomes part of the finished appearance.

Half-Blind Dovetail

Half-blind dovetails are commonly used in drawer construction.

From the side of the drawer, you can see the dovetail pattern. From the front, the joint is hidden.

This gives the drawer the strength of dovetail construction while keeping the drawer front clean and finished.

For kitchen cabinetry, this is a very practical design because you get both strength and a clean appearance.

Sliding Dovetail

A sliding dovetail works a little differently.

Instead of several individual tails and pins, one piece has a long dovetail-shaped groove and the second piece slides into it.

This type of joint can be useful when two components need to connect along a longer surface.

Secret Dovetail

Some dovetail joints are designed so the joint is completely hidden once the pieces are assembled.

These are more complicated to produce and are normally found in specialty woodworking rather than everyday cabinet drawer construction.

Why Dovetail Drawers Matter in a Kitchen

This method is quick to manufacture and can work well for certain cabinet price points. Dovetail construction takes a different approach.

The pieces of wood physically interlock before they are glued together.That gives the joint additional strength and helps the drawer resist pulling apart over time. We do not think staples automatically mean a cabinet is poorly made. Cabinet quality depends on the entire construction, including the materials, hardware, assembly, and how the cabinet will be used. Still, when comparing two similar cabinets, the drawer construction is one of the details worth looking at. It is very easy to check. Just open the drawer and look at the corner.
