How Many Hinges Does Your Cabinet Door Need?

Open a cabinet door that sags, rubs the frame, or won’t stay shut, and nine times out of ten the problem isn’t the door. It’s the hinges: too few of them, or in the wrong spots. The good news is that the rule is simple. Here’s how to figure out how many hinges a cabinet door needs, where they go, and what to check before you install.

The Quick Answer: Go by Height
Door height is the easiest starting point:

Door height                                                                                     Hinges needed

Up to about 40″                                                                                    2

About 40″ to 60″                                                                                   3

About 60″ to 84″                                                                                   4

Most base and wall cabinet doors fall in the first row, so two hinges is what you’ll see on the vast majority of kitchen doors. Tall pantry and utility doors are where the third and fourth hinge come in.

Height Isn’t the Whole Story: Weight and Width Matter Too

Two doors of the same height can behave very differently. A few things change the math:

  • Door material. A solid wood door is heavier than a thin veneer or hollow door of the same size. The heavier the door, the more load each hinge carries over time.
  • Door width. Wide doors put more leverage on the hinges and the cabinet frame than narrow ones.

Door style. A flat slab and a five-piece Shaker door with a thick frame don’t weigh the same.Rule of thumb: if a door is close to a cutoff (say, 38″ to 42″), or it’s wide or solid wood, add the extra hinge. A third hinge costs a few dollars. A sagging door costs a callback.

Soft-Close Hinges: Does the Count Change?

Soft-close hinges use a built-in damper to slow the door as it closes. For standard doors, two soft-close hinges are plenty. For taller or heavier doors, add a third, since the dampers have to slow more weight and uneven pressure can leave the door closing unevenly.

Hinge Count Checklist

  • Measure the door height, not the cabinet height.
  • Use 2 hinges up to about 40″, 3 from about 40″ to 60″, and 4 above that.
  • Add one more hinge if the door is wide, heavy, or solid wood and near a cutoff.
  • Keep the outer hinges 2″ to 4″ from the edges.
  • Space the middle hinges evenly.
  • Use matching hinges all the way down the door. Mixing types leads to uneven closing.

Install Tip: Adjust Before You Judge

Most modern cabinet hinges adjust in three directions: side to side, up and down, and in and out. If a door looks slightly crooked after install, adjust the hinges before assuming something is wrong. A quarter turn on a screw usually fixes it.
