Cabinet Care 101: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Your kitchen cabinets take more daily abuse than almost anything else in your home. Steam from the stovetop, grease splatter, sticky hands, the constant open-and-close of busy mornings — it adds up. The good news is that with a few simple habits, wood cabinets can look great for decades. The bad news is that most people don’t think about cabinet care until something goes wrong.

This guide covers the basics: what to do regularly, what to avoid, and how to handle the most common issues before they become expensive problems.

1. Clean Regularly — and Gently

Wipe cabinet fronts with a damp microfiber cloth weekly. For grease buildup, a small amount of mild dish soap and warm water handles most of it. For natural wood finishes like our Unfinished Maple, follow up with a dry cloth to remove moisture immediately.

Never use bleach, ammonia, or abrasive scrubbers — they strip finishes and cause permanent damage. When in doubt, mild soap and a soft cloth is always the right answer.

2. Keep Moisture Away

Water is wood’s biggest enemy. Wipe up spills right away, run your exhaust fan when cooking with steam, and avoid draping wet towels over cabinet doors. Prolonged moisture causes swelling and warping — especially around the sink base area.

This applies whether you have Shaker-style cabinets or any other finish. The construction quality helps — our cabinets use plywood box frames and birch hardwood that resist moisture better than particleboard — but no cabinet is fully waterproof.

3. Check Hardware Every Few Months

Loose hinge screws are the most common cause of misaligned doors. Tighten them before they become a bigger issue. Most modern hinges are also adjustable — so a slightly crooked door usually takes two minutes to fix without replacing any parts.

In conclusion:

Clean gently, keep moisture away, and stay on top of hardware. Well-maintained cabinets easily last 20+ years — making them one of the best investments in any kitchen renovation.
